Potatoes Showing Again on Plot 5

It's a hard life being a potato. You start shooting and then you get dropped in a trench and covered with soil. So you force your way up to the surface, grow some leaves and along comes a rotten gardener who puts more soil on top of you.

Being tough little things, the spud just forces his way back to the surface. I might just be really cruel and earth them up again.

Sweetcorn Under Cloche on Plot 5

I'm actually a little earlier than I like with the sweetcorn, I don't trust the weather to stay as wonderful as it has been. Still, the cloches should be keeping them safe from an unexpected cold night.

I've 3 more rows in pots but I'm letting the laggards catch up before planting out.

Carrots in the Greenhouse

I sowed a few carrots in the greenhouse earlier in the year and they're doing quite well.

Behind are a couple of aubergines and a couple of chilli peppers. Hopefully we'll be eating young carrots before too long and the shade from the peppers and aubergines won't matter as they'll be  gone.

Tomatoes in the Greenhouse

I've planted out the tomatoes in the border of the large greenhouse. They're quite close spaced but I think they'll be OK. I popped in 3 Ailsa Craig, 3 Harbinger, 3 Gardeners Delight, a Sungold, a Big Boy and one San Marzano plum tomato bush.

There's a few Tom Thumb lettuce interspersed for a quick salad crop.

Topsy Turvy Tomatoes

I'm trying out the Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter (what a shame the last word doesn't start with T) and this is Larry looking unconvinced at it in the small greenhouse.

It will be moved to the rear of the greenhouse and higher to allow for growth but I fixed it lower to allow easier access when I filled it with compost.

Large Greenhouse

The big greenhouse on plot 29 is filling up. On the left you can see the tomatoes, all staked and the stakes wired to the sides and top so they don't bend over etc.

On the right the aubergines and peppers behind a couple of rows of carrots. They're doing very well.

On the step my pliers and a roll of wire used to tie the stakes.

Sarpo Potatoes Doing Well

The Sarpo Mira on plot 29 are doing rather well now, nearly ready for earthing up. There are no gaps, they've all come through.

The beauty of Sarpo is that they are very blight resistant so I'm certain of a crop whatever happens. Perhaps that was not the wisest thing to say.. tempting fate!

Beans, Peas, Artichokes and Comfrey

The small bed on plot 29 has quite a lot going on. On the right of the photo the broad beans are flowering well with the peas coming on behind them.

In the foreground you can see the Jerusalem artichokes are taking off and back by the compost bins the comfrey is nearly ready for a cut.
