Shredders are wonderful tools. If you have a hedge or bushes you know the trimmings will take a long time to rot down in a compost heap. Burning fresh materials will produce masses of smoke, which will not make you the most popular person in the road. Shredding, however, turns them into small chips and you will be amazed how quickly they compost.

I've actually had a pile of shreddings start heating before I've moved it onto the compost heap!

It's not just hedge cuttings that benefit from a shredder. Brassica stems, sweetcorn stalks and any other woody stem will break down quickly into compost after shredding. You can even put ordinary green material through a shredder and gain the benefit of super fast compost.

For an ordinary garden or allotment, an electric shredder will be perfectly OK but if you don't have electricity available or require a more powerful machine that will cope with volume then a petrol shredder is an option. You could also consider buying a generator and using that to make an electric shredder more portable.
