The BBC are campaigning to get everyone growing their own, which has to be good, and have produced this short video guide on starting off squash.

When you start growing your own vegetables it can all seem awfully complicated but honestly it really is quite simple. Personally I would never start beetroot off in a pot, they're so easy to grow straight in the ground. Despite having written 2 books on the subject, if I'm honest, my best advice is to always read the back of the seed packets before you sow!

Key Facts On Growing Squash

  • Squash come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Ornamental gourds are grown as ornaments rather than being edible but are the same family.
  • Butternut squash is just one of the many edible varieties. Try a spaghetti squash for something completely different.
  • Squash will store well for months in a cool shed or garage as long as it isn't damp and there's airflow around.
  • Squash usually need a good summer and long season to produce well. If you can start them early and move into a larger pot whilst the weather stays cold you have a better chance for a good crop.

  • Squash can be grown in containers as well as in the soil, but you need a large container and to feed well as they are a greedy crop.
